Gulf Oil Spill

Gulf Oil Spill: The Upcoming Disaster That We Can Prevent

With the recent oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, our charity is refocusing its efforts to protect low-income families along the Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida and Texas coastline. This is due to the impending floods caused by the upcoming hurricane seasons. This year (and for years to come), the floods caused by the hurricanes will mix sea water and oil - dumping the oil on shore and into people's homes. We aim to strengthen/ waterproof Gulf coast homes before the next hurricane strikes by:

* Fixing cracked home foundations so the water/oil can't leak in
* Installing hurricane proof windows so the winds can't get in
* Floodproofing house doors
* Anchoring home roofs better
* Doing all the little things that cost too much money for low-income families to do - but all things that can save their lives in the next storm.

If we can keep the water out, we can keep the oil out!

An amazing Discovery Channel special has documented the root cause of the devastation caused by the Haiti earthquake on January 12, 2010. The root cause? The poor construction of the buildings - exactly the problem that the International Green Shield exists to solve.

Year One

A short summary of exactly what we accomplished this year:

• Grew IGS from 1 initial creator to over 2,500 supporters in over 18 countries.

• Achieved our IRS 501(c)3 charity status.

• Raised over $32,000 in small donations ($10-$100) to support our first year expansion into Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Boston, Chicago, New York, Sydney, London and more places around the globe.

• Gained media and congressional attention from NBC News to the Huffington Post to the US Senate.

• Gained academic support from top university professors and experts.

• Put IGS's mission on the public map and into the minds of over 5,000 people.

• Developed our IGS Build, IGS Campus and IGS Award programs to begin volunteer missions in 2010.

• As these 3 programs grow this year, all of the time, energy and dedication that you have given us will begin saving lives.

Here's to a wildly successful year 2!

Volunteer - Coordination

IGS coordinators are responsible for organizing IGS volunteer projects and IGS Campus groups. These positions require strong leadership skills and the desire to be actively involved on a weekly, and sometimes daily, basis. You will be coordinating volunteers, scouting project locations, completing prepatory fieldwork and navigating any legal or political issues. To become an IGS coordinator, you will be asked to send in your resume and complete an interview process. No prior experience required, everyone can apply.

To become an IGS coordinator, follow these steps:

STEP 1: Send an email to volunteer@internationalgreenshield.org with your first and last name, your location and your area of interest (i.e., IGS Campus leader, project coordinator, field representative, etc.)

STEP 2: You will receive an email detailing the IGS coordinator positions available in your area along with our volunteer form. Fill out the form (with your resume attached) and email it back to us.

STEP 3: An IGS executive will contact you to set-up your interview date.

IGS coordinator positions are excellent resume builders as they demonstrate your leadership and organizational abilities.

Volunteer - Construction

IGS construction volunteers are responsible for completing the physical work of upgrading, retrotfitting and rebuilding homes, schools, hospitals and other community structures. You do not need to have any construction experience to be an IGS volunteer. Each IGS project has a construction professional to guide you through the work. All you need is a willingness to learn and have fun!

To become an IGS volunteer, follow these steps:

STEP 1: Send an email to volunteer@internationalgreenshield.org with your first and last name, your location and your area of interest (i.e., architect, designer, landscaping, general construction, etc.)

STEP 2: You will receive an email detailing the IGS project locations in your area along with our volunteer form. Pick your location, fill out the form and email it back to us.

STEP 3: Start fundraising for your trip (we will help you with this). IGS does not cover your travel expenses to and from the project location. You are responsible for flying/driving yourself there.

STEP 4: One week before the project begins, you will be contacted by your IGS project coordinator (PC) to make sure you have everything you need. The PC will have a checklist of items for you to follow.

STEP 5: Arrive at the project site ready and excited to work!
